Big Shiny Tunes

If you were a kid or a young adult in the 1990’s, everybody remembers the Big Shiny Tunes compilation series. The series spanned 14 Volumes and Big Shiny 80’s and Big Shiny 90’s. Big Shiny Tunes went on to sell millions of copies. It’s run lasted for over a decade and finished in 2009. Big Shiny Tunes was one of the most popular music series in Canada.

Brought to you by Much Music, Much was the Canadian Version of MTV. If you were lucky enough to have cable then chances are good that at one time or another you watched this channel. For those who only had the FFC’s, (If you have to ask, don’t.) then occasionally some of the bigger music videos would filter down. Usually after the main release and you were already behind in the music scene.

For Canadian music fans, Big Shiny Tunes defined an era. It was the pulse of the rock and alternative scenes. It was a sound track a road trip or Summer and Big Shiny Tunes filled your CD books. In some editions maybe even on Cassette Tape.

Bands and Artists include; Matthew Good Band, I Mother Earth, Goo Goo Dolls, Foo Fighters, Garbage, Blink 182, Sum 41, Billy Talent, Stone Temple Pilots, the list is almost endless.

Although Big Shiny Tunes held a successful reign, there was no ignoring the popularity of digital music and downloading and all good things must come to an end. After 14 Editions and two special editions, the ride was over.
